Formed in 1853 on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, Alameda County faced issues with cattle rustling and thievery on the land route to the California goldfields. With a reputation for lawlessness, the county saw the likes of famous lawmen such as Harry Morse and infamous outlaws like Joaquin Murietta. The sheriff and deputies of Alameda County were constantly busy tackling these challenges. As time passed, the county evolved, bringing forth new law enforcement hurdles.
By the 20th century, the sheriff's office was confronted with antiwar demonstrations, riots, kidnappings, suburban and rural crime, earthquakes, and other disasters. Despite these obstacles, the men and women of county law enforcement remained ever vigilant in their response. Their efforts often made headlines, with the sheriff's office riot squad gaining international fame as the "Blue Meanies" during the 1960s and 1970s.
Local historian, Steven Minniear, delved into the archives of Alameda County to uncover forgotten stories of the sheriff's office. Through the collection and assembly of photographs and information, Minniear shed light on incidents that had been long lost to history. Many of these previously unseen photographs were sourced from the Alameda County Sheriff's Archive, revealing the untold tales that had shaped both the sheriff's office and the communities it protected.
